In its quest to check environmental pollution effectively, the state cabinet recently approved the Rs. 990.26 crore Mula-Mutha river restoration projects falling in the Pune Municipal Committee (PMC). The project named as ‘Pollution Abatement of Rivers’ will be the biggest sewage treatment and river restoration project sanctioned under the National River Conservation Plan.

The project will receive 85% funding amounting to Rs. 841.72 crore from the Union government, while the PMC will have to shell out Rs. 148.54 crore. The project was approved in 2015 during a meeting of officials from the Union government, PMC and the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The agency will give loan to the Union government which will then transfer the same to the PMC as grant for the project aims to treat city’s sewage and restrict its direct release into the rivers.
