Mahindra & Mahindra, which recently created a powertrain division by merging its Powerol genset and engine businesses, is targeting a fivefold jump in annual turnover from the segment to $1 billion in the next six years. The company expects its focus on high-capacity gensets and full-fledged engines will help it reach there.

Apart from developing gensets with capacity to generate 125 KV to 1 MW in the coming years, Mahindra has also secured the rights to make a 9.3-litre diesel engine from former commercial vehicle partner Navistar, people in the know told ET. This engine will be used in high-powered gensets and big mining trucks. On Monday, the company launched a new 125 KV diesel genset, with a factory-gate price of Rs 5.99 lakh. “Our vision is to take the powertrain business to Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 7,000 crore,” Rajan Wadhera, president of the powertrain business, told ET. This will mean creating fresh products, entering into more markets and gaining new customers. “That is a six-year strategic plan that we have made,” he added.
