The Union Environment Ministry has sanctioned the drinking water project proposal by the Puducherry government.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 40 crore. The project proposes to treat water from Ousteri lake and supply it to meet the requirements in Puducherry and Oulgaret municipal limits. The project was proposed earlier, but was disapproved on the grounds that the scheme would disturb the bird sanctuary in the lake. However, the project has now been approved on the grounds that the state government will take steps to protect the sanctuary while implementing the project.
